Service Delivery and Professional Responsibilities

  1. All staff members shall act with honesty and integrity.
  2. Staff members shall neither practice nor condone discrimination when carrying out their responsibilities and duties.
  3. All staff members shall abide by the policies and procedures of Sports Medicine and support its mission.
  4. Staff members shall be committed to providing competent care, which is consistent with the requirements and the limitations of their profession.
  5. Staff members shall provide only those services for which they are qualified working within their scope of practice.
  6. Staff members shall not misrepresent in any manner their skills, training, professional credentials, identity or services.
  7. Staff members shall adhere to the Constitution, the Code of Ethics, the Scope of Practice, policies, and other governing laws and regulations of their respective associations.
  8. Staff members shall conduct themselves in a manner that is respected by fellow staff members, society and their profession
  9. Staff members shall respect the client's rights, dignity, needs, wishes and values.
  10. Staff shall avoid any activity, investment, or interest that might reflect unfavourably on the reputation of Sports Medicine

Business
  1. Staff shall not engage in activities that could create a conflict of interest
  2. Staff shall ensure that all transactions and interactions with clients are ethical and professional
  3. Staff will report any illegal or unethical conduct to management

Marketing
  1. Marketing and communications activities, including but not limited to branding, promotion, sales support, institutional and financial relations, and community outreach, shall present Sports Medicine and its activities fairly and consistently to all stakeholders.
  2. No marketer shall engage in the promotion of goods or services that do not exist, either to test demand or discourage possible competition.
  3. Marketing shall not put personal interests above company interests.
  4. Business communications shall not unfairly disparage or attack the products, services, or reputation of another company.
  5. Marketing activities and messages shall accurately represent the company or organization, its product or service offerings, according to these principles:
    1. Marketing materials shall not use deceptive or misleading statements.
    2. All marketing and business communication will have reasonable supporting documentation.
    3. No form of business communications shall be prepared or knowingly accepted about a product or service that is unsafe and would result in harm to the user unless it gives adequate warning. 
    4. No form of business communications shall be prepared or knowingly accepted that is offensive or in bad taste. 
    5. No form of business communications shall be prepared or knowingly accepted that distorts or changes the meaning of quotes, statements or published material to anything other than that implied by the speaker(s) or author(s). 
  6. No marketing or communication activities shall be carried out that in any way violate the law or government statutes.

Human Resources

  1. The management of business practices shall support a culture of openness, trust, honesty and integrity
  2. Employees shall maintain competence in carrying out professional responsibilities
  3. Management shall adhere to any statutory acts, regulation or by-laws, which relate to the field of human resources management, as well as all civil and criminal laws, regulations and statutes that apply in one’s jurisdiction.
  4. Management shall support, promote and apply the principles of human rights, equity, dignity and respect in the workplace, within the profession and in society as a whole.
  5. Management shall strive to balance organizational and employee needs and interests in the practice of the profession.
  6. Management shall hold in strict confidence all confidential information acquired in the course of the performance of one’s duties, and not divulge confidential information unless required by law and/or where serious harm is imminent.
  7. Management shall either avoid or disclose a potential conflict of interest that might influence or might be perceived to influence personal actions or judgments.
  8. Managers shall maintain personal and professional growth in human resources management by engaging in activities that enhance the credibility and value of the profession.

Violations of the Ethical Code of Conduct

  1. Any staff member of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, who is aware of conduct that he or she considers to be in violation of the Code of Ethics, shall report the incident in writing with as much specificity and documentation as possible to the President or Vice-President. This information may be used in an investigation to determine whether a breach of the Code of Ethics has occurred.
  2. An investigation will be initiated within 48 hours of a report.
  3. Information may be sought from the ethics committees of the appropriate professional association for any staff member as needed.
  4. If a breach of the code of ethics is proven to have occurred, the President and Vice-President will take necessary action.
During an investigation, the President and Vice-President are bound by confidentiality so that complaints will come forward without fear of reprisal and that reputations may be protected throughout. The exceptions to complete confidentiality are a disclosure, which would oblige Sports Medicine to take necessary steps to ensure the health, safety and security of any staff member of the company or the public, or a legal subpoena. In particular, Sports Medicine shall report the possible violation of any federal or provincial law to the appropriate authorities.
