Thursday Night Lights

The Examiner and Sports Medicine seek to shine a spotlight on the high school football community and their fantastic athletes and coaches.

Thursday Night Lights sees afternoon football games moved to the evening, so parents and friends can watch.

The generous support and community spirit of Sports Medicine make Thursday Night Lights a reality.

The staff at Sports Medicine are familiar faces on the high school football circuit. They provide a physiotherapist or athletic therapist on site at every game, positioning themselves as a great supporter of high school football in our community. So when it became apparent back in 2006 that bleachers were needed for huge crowds at each Thursday Night Lights event, Sports Medicine stepped up to the plate to assist. The portable bleachers truly have made a big difference, providing a place for all the fans to come together and watch with a great view of all the gridiron action. This could not have been made possible without the support of Sports Medicine. Owners Rick and Tamara Schaly feel that Thursday Night Lights is a natural fit for Sports Medicine. "We have been providing coverage at every single high school football and rugby game in Simcoe County for over 18 years, says Tamara. "Thursday Night Lights is a great community event and we wanted to help support the athletes and raise the profile of high school football in our area." Rick has strong ties to our community: he was born and raised here and has been operating Sports Medicine for over 22 years. "I've played high school football here in Barrie myself, and it's great to see what a success Thursday Night Lights has become."

Kempenfelt Bay School Hockey Program

HOCKEY CANADA SKILLS ACADEMY ARRIVES IN BARRIE!
BARRIE – JUNE 30, 2009

At the 1999 Molson Open-Ice Summit in Toronto, the delegation recommended that Hockey Canada investigate ways to support the design and delivery of school based hockey programming that would make use of facilities during regular school hours. The delegation at the summit recommended to:

“Promote cooperative efforts between school boards, local hockey associations and sponsors, to better utilize ice times and school facilities and move towards the development of sport schools.”

This recommendation is now a major priority for Hockey Canada. For this purpose, Hockey Canada has developed the Hockey Canada Skills Academy program, and is now available at Kempenfelt Bay School, in Barrie, Ontario.

A hockey academy is an institution that allows young hockey players to take part in a training program during school hours. In many European countries, hockey academies form the base of all hockey development. European hockey academies have been in operation for decades. It has long been known that to develop a talent, ability, or skill to its full potential 10,000 training hours are needed. This translates 3 hours of daily training for over 10 years.

Through cooperative ventures with the Canadian education system, this is now possible. The school system has the ability to create a timetable that will allow the students to participate in daily, semi-weekly or weekly hockey training sessions. A teacher, a coach, or a combination of both, can run the sessions. The school itself or an independent organization, such as a minor hockey association or a private group, can operate the hockey portion of the program. The training that takes place within a hockey academy is very much in line with the role of the school in other curriculum areas; enhance students’ opportunities to learn and excel academically and athletically.

The Hockey Canada Skills Academy is Now available at Kempenfelt Bay School in Barrie. KBS is an independent, co-educational elementary school with enrolment from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 located on Bryne Drive.  At Kempenfelt Bay School we are committed not only to academic excellence, but also to the total development of our students.  Teaching the whole child is achieved through our integrated and challenging curriculum, a complimentary, enriched Arts Programme and the Hockey Canada Skills Academy.

The programme features several elite coaches including Paul Matheson, from Mariposa School of Skating, National Training Rink staff coaches and several professional players as guest coaches.

KBS welcomes all interested families and offers Financial Assistance.

Doctors of acupuncture join sports medicine team

Sports Medicine is pleased to announce the addition of two Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncturists to their team. The Doctors of Acupuncture are now available for client care at all three clinics. Christine Lang and Charlene Mercer will provide Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture within a multidisciplinary team of professionals, helping people “Get Better, Faster!”

Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine, which stimulates the body’s natural healing, based on the philosophy of energy flow throughout channels in the body. If the channels become blocked the energy backs up and overflows, therefore creating negative symptoms such as pain or fatigue.

There is an ever-increasing mountain of research to support acupuncture in the scientific world. Modern science rationalizes acupuncture results through the release of endorphins and other natural chemicals to stimulate the nervous system. No matter the cause, acupuncture simulates the body’s natural healing abilities.

Chinese Medicine is a regulated health profession throughout the United States as well as several provinces in Canada. It is currently undergoing the acts of regulation in Ontario, which will help to eliminate some of the stereotypes associated with acupuncture and will better protect against unqualified practitioners.

Acupuncture can help treat a full spectrum of injuries and conditions, which includes migraine headaches, sinusitis, TMJ, trigeminal neuralgia, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, insomnia, palliative care, depression and anxiety.

In addition, acupuncture provides specialized treatment for rehabilitation during injury and accident recovery. Acupuncturists have extensive experience treating common knee problems such as degenerative conditions, osteoarthritis, pre/post joint replacement pain and tendonitis, knee, ankle and groin pain, sports injury strains and sprains.
