Nutrition is often overlooked as an important contributor to overall health and happiness. Eating the proper nutritious and energetic foods is a significant factor of well-being, which supports healing, health and balance. Registered Dietitians are uniquely trained food and nutrition experts. Collaborating with other health professionals as part of a health care team, they are the recognized experts in translating scientific, medical and nutrition information into practical individualized therapeutic diets and meal plans for people with the goals of health promotion, disease prevention and treatment.

Who can benefit from Dietary Counselling?
Individuals dealing with:
- heart disease (previous heart attack, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis)
- diabetes, hypoglycemia
- digestive issues
- food allergies
- athletes
- colon problems
- obesity, overweight issues

These are just some of the conditions that can benefit from the services of a Registered Dietitian. Overall, clients benefit from the support they receive for healing and recovery, by learning the importance of nutritious food in creating a healthy lifestyle and by learning what foods will help to promote a healthier lifestyle and will benefit the client's specific condition or injury.

What do Dietary Counselling sessions entail?
The initial consultation is designed to gather information regarding a client's exercise habits, stress levels and family health history, to reveal specific imbalances in the body systems and to obtain a detailed description of typical meals and snacks.

Subsequent consultations are specifically designed to meet the needs of each client. Topics covered include stress management, weight management, basic exercise regimens and meal planning.

Sessions are one-hour in length. Couples and families are encouraged to consult the Registered Dietitian together to ensure that everyone's lifestyles are taken into account and that their needs are met. For those families of 3 or more coming for a consultation, the initial consultation will be 2 hours long to allow for everyone's needs to be assessed.

Nutrition counselling may be covered by private extended health plans.  A physician’s referral may be required. This service is available at both the Wellington Sports Medicine - north end location & Barrie Sports Medicine - south end location locations.
