FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How can a chiropractor help during pregnancy?

It is very common to experience discomfort during pregnancy, which can be attributed to two things. The first is your growing baby. This additional weight places more stress through your joints and changes your gait and posture; which leads to discomfort. The second is the increased levels of relaxin. This hormone has increased quantities during pregnancy to help prepare the body for labour, which causes the loosening of pelvicligaments. As these loosen, the stability of your pelvis is compromised, leading to dysfunction and quite commonly pain.

Chiropractic care can reduce pelvic and low back pain, pubic symphysis discomfort, rib pain, numbness, minimize intra-uterine constraint by balancing the pelvis and removing the torsion of pelvic ligaments and ease labour pains.

When should a pregnant woman seek chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is beneficial throughout the entire pregnancy. Having chiropractic care early on in your pregnancy minimizes the risk of discomfort, dysfunction and complications that could occur during pregnancy, especially when you reach the third trimester.

Is it safe for baby?

Yes, absolutely. It is actually beneficial for the baby as well. The chiropractic adjustments, specifically to the pelvis, help optimize the babyís position, allowing more space for the baby to move and grow.

What is the Webster technique?

It is a chiropractic technique tailored towards pregnant individuals to create balance in pelvic bony structures, muscles and ligaments. With the use of a chiropractic pregnancy pillow, my pregnant patients are able to lie on their stomach comfortably to provide a safe and effective treatment for mom and baby. The goal is to reduce the effects of joint restrictions, specifically in the pelvis, remove torsion of pelvic ligaments, allowing more space for baby and to loosen up tight musculatures.

Do you have special training to work with pregnant women?

Yes, through the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association), I have completed numerous courses and seminars to acquire the skills required to work with pregnant women. I also hold certification in the Webster technique.

BABIES

Is it safe for a baby to have a chiropractic treatment?

Absolutely. The goal of working with babies is to optimize neurological development. Chiropractic adjustments to a baby are much different than an adjustment to an adult. It is very gentle, about the same pressure you would apply to a ripe tomato without breaking through the skin. There are a few different techniques that can be used. The first is a gentle vibration with my finger over the area of concern, the second is a light tap to the area and the third is a sustained pressure over the area.

When would you recommend chiropractic care for a baby?

There are specific signs and symptoms I always tell parents to look for in their baby. If anything in the list below is present in your baby, I would recommend chiropractic care:

- Chronic head tilt - Preference of turning head to one side

- Flat spot on head - Difficulty latching when nursing

- Colic - Preference for one breast over the other

- Constipation - Fussy during tummy time

What age is safe for treatment?

Chiropractic care is safe for all ages. I have worked with newborns to geriatrics and all ages in-between. Birth is a traumatic event for babies as there is a lot of force and stress on the infantís spine and nervous system during the birth process. If labour was really long or quite short, if interventions such as vacuum or forceps had to be used, if the child is large, if you are having twins or if the infant is in an undesirable position, these can all affect the infantís health and nervous system. Chiropractic care at an early age can help detect any dysfunction early and promote optimal neurological development.

What kind of education/training do you have to work with babies?

While in Chiropractic College, I was enrolled in a childcare class where I learned the neurological milestones and proper development of children. As well, I have completed over 100 hours of training through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. I have continued educating myself through courses and seminars geared towards treating the pediatric population. With additional hands-on learning, I have acquired the necessary skills to treat the pediatric population confidently and competently.
