Orthopaedic Surgeons and Sport Medicine Physicians Consultations

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre offers fast-track access to a team of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Sport Medicine Physicians. Our roster includes four surgeons who are available for general orthopaedic patients and sports injuries, and three Sport Medicine Physicians who are available for individuals who have experienced a sports-related injury or who have an injury keeping them from sports and activity.

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre’s team of Orthopaedic Surgeons provides consultation for musculoskeletal conditions needing further investigation and assessment in an expedient manner. Sports Medicine’s team of health professionals work closely with physicians in order to ensure appropriate referrals and access to surgical consultations. The goal of early and timely access to these services ensures that individuals are provided with all services that are required to allow them to reach an optimal level of function.

The Sports Medicine team consists of a core group of sport specialists who have been involved in the care of local athletes at the highest levels of competition. We have treated professional athletes, Olympic athletes, and a large number of amateur athletes participating at the local, national and international level. This includes the weekend warrior who wants to stay active and healthy participating in the sport they love.

Our team is comprised of:

Dr. Katherine Nanos, MD, FRCSC, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Dr. Katherine Nanos graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from McMaster University and subsequently received her Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University. She completed her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and thereafter completed her postgraduate fellowship training in Sports Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is board certified in both Canada and the United States.

To date, she has worked with athletes competing in a variety of different sports, at a variety of levels; from “weekend warriors” to professional athletes (NFL, MLB, NBA), swimmers to football players. Dr. Nanos has a special interest in working with patients experiencing pain due to overuse injuries including tendinopathies and osteoarthritis.

Dr. Nanos had the great fortune of being trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound and orthobiologics by international leaders and pioneers in these fields. In addition, she has participated in related courses through AIUM, AAPMR and AMSSM, and taught ultrasound on the national level in the United States. These learned concepts, techniques, and their applications now play an important role in her practice of Sports/Musculoskeletal Medicine, used in an effort to assist the body in harnessing its natural resources to combat pain, improve function, accelerate healing, and avoid/postpone surgery in the appropriate patient. Currently, her focus is on the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in the management of osteoarthritis and chronic tendon injuries, affecting athletes and non-athletes alike. In addition to PRP, she commonly performs hyaluronic acid, and corticosteroid injections as indicated for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. All of these procedures are done under ultrasound guidance.

Dr. Nanos also commonly uses ultrasound as an extension of her physical examination to aid in formulating a diagnosis. The new state-of-the-art NextGen LOGIQ* e R8 Compact Digital ultrasound system is a valuable tool to help Dr. Nanos provide a higher level of care for her patients' soft tissue injuries. Dr. Nanos is able to address a variety of injuries affecting tendons, joints and the plantar fascia in the office with non-surgical, minimally invasive, procedures/injections. Ultrasound provides a high resolution/crisp image, a higher degree of accuracy and greater interaction with feedback from the patient.

To understand more about Dr. Nanos' role as a Sports Medicine Physician, listen to this PODCAST. In this podcast, Dr. Robby Bowers, a Sports Medicine Physician, also from Emory University, discusses orthobiologics (PRP therapies and stem cells). Dr. Bowers is also an Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, at Emory.
