Sport Physiotherapy

A Sport Physiotherapist is a Physiotherapist who has completed the Diploma in Sport Physiotherapy through Sport Physiotherapy Canada. This designation means that the Sport Physiotherapist has completed written and practical exams, in addition to having experience working with athletes and active individuals from all backgrounds. They are also qualified to work with Canada's High Performance athletes, be it in competition, training or rehabilitation. In addition to their orthopaedic skill set, the Sport Physiotherapist also has experience with athletic taping, protective equipment, emergency care, and developing a plan for a safe return to life and to play.

Anik Sarkar, Registered Physiotherapist, has also earned his Sport PT Certification. Anik graduated from McMaster University with a Master of Science degree in Physiotherapy in 2014. Prior to that, he received his Bachelor of Science with Honours in Kinesioloy and Health Sciences from York University. During his academic time, he took focused courses in Athletic Therapy, Orthopaedics and Manual Therapy, Reconditioning and Evidence-Based Medicine. He is currently pursuing a third degree in Administrative Studies in order to further improve skills in ethical and competent leadership. Shannon Michels, our new FCAMPT Program Director, graduated with a BSc in Honours Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, a BHSc in Physiotherapy from McMaster University and completed the Masters of Clinical Science in Physiotherapy from Western University in 2014. In 2003, she completed the Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy and is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapists. Shannon is a credentialed instructor with the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Shannon has developed the ability to incorporate a variety of manual based modalities such as manipulation, fascial release, acupuncture and craniosacral therapy to manage complex orthopaedic and pain issues. With over 20 years of experience, Shannon has had the opportunity to work with elite performance and recreational athletes.

Raphael Soares is a Senior Physiotherapist who has had the opportunity to work in health care centres of excellence treating diverse subsets of patients promoting recovery and prevention. Raphael's world class education focuses on cutting edge advanced therapies delivering best practice principles. He graduated in Physiotherapy in Rio de Janeiro in 2004 and became registered in Canada in 2012. In 2019, he accepted a job offer to work for a clinic with branches in Kuwait City and Dubai. Early 2020, he returned to the Sports Medicine to resume his activities.

Raphael methodically investigates the primary source of the dysfunction and believes that a client-focused approach associated to an evidence-based practice is the key for an effective model of treatment. He has extensive training in Ultrasound Guided Musculoskeletal Interventions (UK), Osteopathic Techniques (USA, UK, Switzerland), Functional Dry Needling (USA, Canada) and P-DTR (Denmark). Raphael has started at McMaster University in September 2020 a Master of Science thesis-based course in the Rehabilitation Science Program which provides training that will develop knowledge, appraisal and evaluation skills. His research will focus on in-person vs. tele-health treatment methods for low back and shoulder dysfunctions including the use of active rehab associated to other modalities such as dry needling and manual therapy.
